From Adam Sharp, Youth Pastor: Crystal Valley Missionary Church

So Sunday night at Crystal Valley we had a Relationship and Sex Q & A with our junior high and high school students.

When the students walked in, we had a number up on the screen that they could text. My intern received the text and was our filter for the questions since we had junior high students there. After the session my intern actually said there were no inappropriate questions asked.

We talked for an hour and then released the students who's parents were there to pick them up. We gave everyone a 5 minute break and then we sat in a circle and they just started firing questions again. After another 45 minutes, we shut things down at the church and went to a local restaurant and split guys and girls and talked for another hour. It was a great time getting to talk with students and answering their questions. Here is a sample of some of the questions they texted in:
  • Why do people who get a boyfriend or girlfriend forget about their friends?
  • Does it hurt the first time?
  • Why do guys think its cool to talk about sex?
  • Would it be a sin for a married couple to have sex on Sunday because its a holy day?
  • How can you tell if a guy only wants you for sex?
  • How fun is sex from a scale of 1 - 10?
  • If someone is raped, is it a sin for them?
  • Why do girls want to give up their V-card?
  • How would you start a conversation about boundaries with your boyfriend?
  • What is oral sex?
  • Can you get an STD if you use a condom?
  • Is dating in high school worth it?
These questions (there were at least 20 more) were some of the ones that were texted in when we were talking just openly about relationships and what they feel at school, and how many parents don't talk with them about sexuality.

The reason we did this event is because we know students have questions and they aren't being heard. I would highly recommend doing this event. We did this without any parents in the room. It was just my wife, Esther, and I because we wanted the students to be able to talk openly and honestly with us.

I hope this might be a help to you as you look at doing an event like this at your church. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. My email is cvmcadam@gmail.com.
